Border Buda is a cultural project focusing on the Buda area, an industrial zone on the border between three municipalities - Machelen, Vilvoorde and Brussels.
The first phase (May ‘23 - May ‘24) focused on artistic installations in public space. In addition to the six artists that were selected for a residency trajectory, creating temporary and semi-permanent interventions, four artists were commissioned to create permanent artworks in public space, and two artists were programmed in collaboration with the local cultural partners.
Besides the artistic programme, a socio-cultural trajectory focusing on the industrial heritage was started in collaboration with the City of Brussels, gathering and making public the local knowledge and stories through a series of guided walks, podcasts and publications.
Central to the outdoors exhibition are the axes of transportation that form Buda’s identity: the railway, the air traffic, the viaduct, the waterways and the bike arteries. These transport axes, their different speeds and the borders that cross the area (between the different municipalities, but also regions) are the parameters on which the artists based their site-specific works, taking as the conceptual starting point the physical notion of ‘speed’, namely the distance travelled per unit of time: (v (speed) = d (distance) / t (time)).
